Senior Day at Church Proves To Be a Fun Occasion

The Girard United Methodist Church, 401 W. Center St., hosted a Senior Day at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the church’s Wesley Center.

About ten senior citizens attended the event, where they have lunch, visit with each other, and play games.

A majority of the attendees were members of the church, but not all of them. The event was open to the entire community.

Norma Rothe, Cathy Zeitler, and Ella Jean Kuhar prepared the food, which consisted of sloppy joes, veggies, chips, and dessert.

Ron and Evelyn Weller started the group meetings about five years ago. The group meets once a month, on the fourth Tuesday of every month. The group runs April through October.

Every meeting opens with prayer led by one of the group members.

Doris Love said that they have a senior citizen’s group of Pleasant Hill residents usually over the age of 55. One section is independent living, and another is dependent living with nurses on staff. They are taking a bus Friday to Kampsville to eat at the Kampsville Inn, which is right on the river. Fish is the main course served there. In the past, they have taken a bus to Litchfield for shopping. The group takes trips twice per month. In the fall, they take a trip to see the leaves that have changed colors at Pere Marquette State Park.

“We senior citizens still like to get together, eat, and play games,” Love said.

“Anything for entertainment usually,” she added.

Jean Ball was originally from St. Louis County before moving to the area. “It’s usually a fun time. We eat and talk and play games,” she said. “This is just a nice bunch of people.”

The group had a drawing for gift certificates to Doc’s Soda Fountain and Magic Beans Coffee House.

Although she’s retired, Ella Jean Kuhar remains active in the community. For senior citizens, it’s important to have an outlet where people meet and talk to each other. “It gets some people out of the house to socialize,” she said.
